A Very Special Pardon

A Very Special Pardon

A Very Special Pardon

Last April, President Bush sparked a media firestorm when he commuted the sentence of an administration official, Scooter Libby, who was convicted of perjury. Libby was slated to begin a thirty month prison sentence when the president intervened and took away the sentence. He believed the punishment was too harsh. Some criticized the president because they believed Libby escaped justice, others criticized the president because they believed Libby should have received a full pardon which would have justified him before the law. The issue caused me to think of a very special pardon that is available to everyone. This pardon is extended by God for sin. The Bible states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) God extends a pardon to the sinner through Jesus Christ! The Bible also states, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This is wonderful news! There is no reason to live in fear of God’s wrath because the penalty has been paid and the pardon has been offered! Nevertheless, a pardon must be accepted for it to be valid.
The story has been told of a man by the name of George Wilson from Philadelphia who robbed the Reading Railroad in 1829. In the process, the conductor was wounded. Wilson was arrested, tried and sentenced to be hanged. However, some influential friends intervened on his behalf and petitioned President Andrew Jackson for a pardon. Jackson granted the pardon, but Wilson refused it. The local sheriff, not wanting to execute a pardoned man, appealed to President Jackson. Jackson, not knowing what to do appealed to Chief Justice John Marshall. Marshall rendered the following decision: “A pardon is a piece of paper, the value of which depends on its acceptance by the person implicated.” George Wilson was hanged! My friend, don’t be a George Wilson. You have been offered a pardon by God. Have you accepted it? His Word says, “… Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13). God extends his pardon to everyone, sadly, like George Wilson, many refuse to accept it.
God’s pardon not only provides hope for eternal life, but frees the individual from the burden of guilt that sin brings. Guilt causes anxiety and depression and robs one of sleep. By accepting God’s pardon one allows this burden to fall away. I was saddened to learn recently that the most frequently prescribed drugs in America are antidepressants. It seems Americans spend millions of dollars medicating the effects of this sinful broken world in their lives looking for peace. Why not accept God’s pardon today and experience a cost free peace that transcends all understanding?
