A couple posts down, I wrote about the Kearny freshwater marsh. Nobody seems to care. I challenge anyone to go to the Gunnel Oval at sunrise, park in the north east corner, cross the defunct railroad tracks, and gaze at the ducks, cattails, snowy egrets, the colors of the rising sun coming up over Manhattan, and not be moved. This area needs to be protected as an open space oasis for the enjoyment of our current citizens and our children and grandchildren. I was there this morning and was awe struck by the natural beauty. The New Jersey Meadowlands Authority, formerly the Hackensack Meadowland Development Commission, should be approached about allowing this small track of nature to be preserved for us and future generations. It seems some work is being done. I know volunteers come through trying to clean litter and other unsightly abuses, but I noticed a lack of trash cans in the area where people tend to fish. Kearny is a former industrial town, bounded on the west by Newark, to the east by Jersey City, and to have this potential jewel in our midst is a godsend. Let us not pass up this opportunity.
